Support > Boot up > Hardware failure

If we are presented with one of the following:

  • No power either to the monitor or the case (screen black and no lights on the box)

  • Pictures on the screen and a series of beeps coming from the pc

  • Error message on the screen such as : Hard disk failure, Cannot read drive C: or Keyboard error

  • Once Windows starts the message: the mouse is not present appears

First of all let establish if there is power supply from the wall socket to the computer. If even one light is on on the CPU box or the monitor (provided the monitor receive power from the back of the CPU box ), chances are the power is present, if not check the main wall socket, the power cable or the firmness of the power cable connection and monitor cable. In case you use a UPS, check the UPS it is switched on.

If the above is ok, and still no picture on the screen, chances are the internal power supply, the motherboard or an internal component are faulty call us in that case, it is a serious fault.

Now lets suppose we can see pictures on the screen but the computer shows an error like : Hard disk failure or Keyboard error. In the first instance the problem is generally terminal, meaning that the hard drive is not detected by the system or badly damaged, indicating a terminal fault in the hard drive itself (hopefully you have backups !), in which case should be replaced. On the second error we could have just a not properly connected keyboard, just make sure a firm connection of the connector in the back of the CPU case otherwise a dry joint on the board or the keyboard have to be replaced.

A beeping pc at start-up indicates normally either a faulty component (video card, memory etc.) or a card/memory not inserted correctly, switch off the computer, open the case and push all cards/modules firmly in their slots, switch on the computer, if still no luck call us also in this case it might be a serious problem.

An error of missing mouse device during the Windows boot up generally means a faulty or not connected properly mouse, make sure the plug is inserted in the right connector and firmly, otherwise try to substitute the mouse, if problem persist is either a damaged or incorrectly set-up port. The newer computers and the newest Windows (XP and Vista) will not stop for a missing mouse, but obviously, without a mouse Windows is pretty useless. Also check the batteries if you have a wireless mouse and keyboard.
