Support > How to fix Internet Explorer errors

Internet Explorer is a popular web browser from Microsoft. When using this browser, it's not uncommon to have add-ons such as toolbars, ActiveX controls, browser helper objects and other components to enhance the functionality of Internet Explorer. These objects, some desirable, some not, share the same memory space as IE and may generate page faults or exceptions. In addition, other drivers and programs interact with Internet Explorer which can cause conflicts as well as IE errors.

To troubleshoot Internet Explorer errors, follow these steps.

1.   When the error occurs, the Microsoft Internet Explorer Reporting Tool will display on Internet Explorer 5 Service Pack 2 and above, and Windows XP and above.

a.   Choose the Send Error Report button. This will send the report to Microsoft.

b.   If a fix or a workaround is available from Microsoft, clicking the More Information button will give you exact information and steps for solving the particular error you are receiving.

2.   Use the Internet Explorer Repair Tool if available. This tool is available in Internet Explorer 5 through the Control Panel. To access this tool, you need to go to the Control Panel and choose Add/Remove Programs. Find Internet Explorer in the list and choose Remove. You'll see a screen that says Repair the current installation of Internet Explorer.

a.   If you can't access this tool using the Add/Remove Programs try going to the Start button, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information and then clicking the Tools menu on the tool bar.

3.      Disable third-party tool bars, tool bands and browser helper objects.

a.      Close all windows of Internet Explorer.

b.      Go to the Start Button and open the Control Panel.

c.       Choose Internet Options

d.      Click the Advanced Tab

e.      Find the Browsing section.

f.       Clear the box that says "Enable third-party browser extensions".

g.      Restart Internet Explorer.  

4.    Boot you system using a clean boot up routine to see if you can isolate the problem. Techniques for clean booting are available from Microsoft.

5.   If your IE errors only occur when visiting specific web sites, it could be related to damaged or corrupted cookies, favorites, history, temporary internet files or ActiveX controls.

a.       Delete cookies and temporary internet files by going to Tools, Internet Options
    and choosing the General tab.

b.      Click Delete Cookies.

c.       Click Delete Files and delete offline content.

6.   Run the system file check tool available to users of Windows XP and Windows 2000. This will scan and repair system files.

a.      Click the Start button

b.      Choose Run

c.       Type: sfc /scannow

d.      Press enter

If none of these steps solve your IE errors, try reinstalling Internet Explorer or upgrading to the latest version. Other steps you can take include scanning for and removing spyware because unwanted applications such as browser hijackers, browser helper objects and other programs may be on your system causing these errors.
